At Lane End Farm Trust, as part of our animal care activities, we breed a variety of different chicken types. This enables the students to see the whole life cycle of the birds from laying the egg, through hatching and growing, to breeding and back to egg laying. The breeds chosen are known for being friendly and gentle, allowing plenty of hands on experience, and the variety of sizes and colours demonstrate how different these birds can be. We also, form time to time, have some of these lovely birds for sale, so that others can experience the pleasure of owning their own chickens. Our birds are of all different ages - those old enough can be re-homed straight away, while the younger ones can be reserved. We breed Pekins and have cream Legbar hens that lay blue eggs. Pekins make excellent pets due to their small size and tame, gentle natures. They lay small eggs, make great mums and come in a variety of colours and patterns.
