At Lane End Farm Trust, as part of our animal care activities, we are breeding a variety of different chicken types. This enables the students to see the whole life cycle of the birds from laying the egg, through hatching and growing, to breeding and back to egg laying. The breeds chosen are known for being friendly and gentle, allowing plenty of hands on experience, and the variety of sizes and colours demonstrate how different these birds can be. We are selling some of these lovely birds so that others can experience the pleasure of owning their own chickens. Our birds are of all different ages - those old enough can be re-homed straight away, while the younger ones can be reserved. Below are the breeds we currently have.
ALL BREEDS: Hens = from £15.00 Cocks = from £5.00

Silver Grey Dorkings
These are one of the oldest British breeds and are a larger bird, unusually with 5 toes. They are quiet and docile but are also very active and love to forage. The breed is hardy and lays white eggs.
This is a large bird and one of the oldest known, being a 'heritage breed'. The Sussex comes in a number of different colours but we have chosen to breed the Speckled type. These sweet natured birds are friendly, gentle and good layers. They lay light brown eggs.
The Campine breed originated in Belgium and has been bred for several centuries for its beautiful feathering and white shelled eggs, coming to the UK in the 19th Century. Campines have been bred in 2 colours - golden and silver - and are a small, tightly feathered bird. The breed is a lively one that prefers to be out and about free ranging most of the time as the birds are very alert and inquisitive.
Black Bearded Bantams
One of the true bantams, originating in Belgium, these little bearded birds have been bred for exhibition for many years. They are found in many colors. The hens are very friendly and make wonderful pets and, due to their small size, are particularly good for children to handle.
